RSPH Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Rodenticides

From 1st October 2016, proof of competence is required for the purchase of professional rodenticides. Competence at point-of-sale can be either a certificate from an approved training course on rodent control or, until December 2017 for farmers, up-to-date proof of membership of an approved farm assurance scheme, whose audited standards include a requirement for safe and effective rodent control.

The Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU) works with the UK supply chain to ensure the rules for professional use rodenticides are understood and applied across all user sectors. Those who distribute these products, which are so important in public health, food safety and animal hygiene, have checks in place to ensure that only competent professionals can buy products under the stewardship regime.

The RSPH Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Rodenticides meets all the requirements of the CRRU Training Framework for the Second Generation Anti-Coagulant Rodenticides (SGARs) stewardship regime and has been approved by the CRRU Training and Certification work group. It provides learners with an understanding of why the purchase and use of SGARs is controlled and why other rodent control methods should be considered before rodenticides are used. The course covers:

• The need to manage commensal rodents, their biology and behaviour;
• How to assess a site prior to implementing measures for the management of commensal rodents;
• Methods for the management of commensal rodents;
• Requirements for health and safety and record keeping when carrying out rodent management activities.

This is a one-day course and is assessed at the end of the day by a multiple-choice exam consisting of 25 questions over 40 minutes. Candidates must achieve a score of 17/25 to pass the assessment.

• The course is charged at £120.00 + VAT, which includes lunch and refreshments;
• The RSPH exam fee for 2021 is £25.00 + VAT.
