Practical Vertebrate Trapping

Practical Vertebrate Trapping

Vertebrate trapping has become increasingly important in the delivery of a pest management programme, primarily due to:

  • The Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU) stewardship scheme UK code of best practice;
  • Risk hierarchy;
  • Increased label restrictions;
  • A focus on the reduction in the use of pesticides.

This is a one-day course aimed at pest controllers who want to add vertebrate trapping to their service portfolio. The course is divided into two parts. The first part is based in the training room, covering theory, followed by an afternoon practical session. The training room based session is tutor led, but it is expected that the attendees will become involved in discussions to understand how the information relates directly to them and their organisation. The second session involves the practical aspects of placing and setting traps. The aim of the course is to allow the candidate to confidently trap vertebrate pests, such as moles, rabbits, grey squirrels, pigeons, rats and mice.

Aspects covered during this course include:

  • Life cycles and biology of target pests and reasons for control;
  • Non-target species;
  • Legislation;
  • Traps available;
  • Placement and setting of traps;
  • Trap maintenance;
  • Health and safety, including risk assessments, report writing and record keeping.

The practical aspects of this course are taught outdoors, therefore we recommend that candidates bring along suitable outdoor clothing and footwear.

The attendees are encouraged to bring along any traps they possess along with any warning signs, treatment reports or risk assessments. These can be reviewed and any areas that may need further development identified.

Fees

The course fee is £120.00 + VAT, including lunch, refreshments and course materials.

An attendance certificate will be provided and, if you are a member of BASIS Professional Register of Managers and Pest Technicians (PROMPT), CPD points are available for this course.
